What is Recovery Coaching?

Recovery Coaching is a person-centred form of case management and coordination of services to assist people in navigating their healing journey in a complicated mental health system. We recognise that the mental health sector can be overwhelming. Knowing what services are going to be of most use to clients personally, how to access them, and how to fund them can be difficult without both professional and lived experience. UpBeat Health and Wellbeing’s Recovery Coaches are qualified, knowledgeable, kind, and keep it real.

Alongside assisting with the logistics of accessing the NDIS, Tailored Care Packages, insurance, and more, Recovery Coaching is a form of mentorship and coaching. Our Recovery Coaches are not clinical, they’re personal. They exist to get to know our clients and anyone important in their lives. They listen. They do not tell clients what to do. Instead, they help them understand different services available and make empowered decisions and show up consistently to meet their recovery goals.

Our Recovery Coaches all have lived experience with mental illness and recovery. UpBeat Health and Wellbeing is an organisation full of neurodiverse trauma-survivors. We speak at the same level as our clients.

Who is Recovery Coaching for?

Recovery Coaching is traditionally a role envisioned to help people access the NDIS, however at UpBeat Health and Wellbeing we recognise that anyone can benefit from a Recovery Coach.

For clients who are neurodiverse or have a mental health condition, accessing help can be difficult when it requires a multitude of emails, forms, phone calls, appointment bookings, follow up appointments, insurance claims, and plan reviews.

Recovery Coaching could benefit:

  • Individuals who don’t know where to start or what would be helpful to them personally.
  • People needing support to navigate the NDIS.
  • People facing financial hardship.
  • ADHD individuals who have executive dysfunction.
  • Dyslexic individuals who have difficulty reading and writing to an advanced level.
  • People who experience regular low-moods that negatively impact their ability to consistently access mental health supports.
  • People with trauma backgrounds who become dysregulated when self-advocating for assistance.
  • People with medical or authority trauma who want support from their own community.

How does Recovery Coaching work?

Our Recovery Coaches meet clients at any place convenient to them for the first meeting and also offer Telehealth assistance.

The first session will be centred around getting to know the client and their goals, past experience seeking assistance, and any barriers they have faced in their recovery so far. Recovery Coach and client will then begin to problem-solve together. Both logistic and emotional barriers are considered and coached through.

Recovery coaching could be one session or a regular weekly occurrence for the duration of the time a client accesses UpBeat Health and Wellbeing’s services. While we specialise in our own offerings, we also have the ability to coordinate with other services and agencies to assure our clients have streamlined mental healthcare support. We regularly attend Healthcare Team Meetings with our clients to advocate for them in medical settings.
